Screven County, Georgia

Screven County is a county located in the U.S. State of Georgia. As of 2000, the population is 15,374. The county's county seat is Sylvania, Georgia6.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,698 km² (656 mi²). 1,679 km² (648 mi²) of it is land and 18 km² (7 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.09% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 15,374 people, 5,797 households, and 4,104 families residing in the county. The population density is 9/km² (24/mi²). There are 6,853 housing units at an average density of 4/km² (11/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 53.56% White, 45.29% African American, 0.14% Native American, 0.26% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 0.20% from other races, and 0.49% from two or more races. 0.96% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 5,797 households out of which 33.70% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.00% are married couples living together, 18.30% have a female householder with no husband present, and 29.20% are non-families. 26.50% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.40% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.60 and the average family size is 3.14.

In the county the population is spread out with 27.90% under the age of 18, 8.90% from 18 to 24, 26.50% from 25 to 44, 22.70% from 45 to 64, and 14.00% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 91.40 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 86.80 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $29,312, and the median income for a family is $34,753. Males have a median income of $30,228 versus $20,154 for females. The per capita income for the county is $13,894. 20.10% of the population and 15.50% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 22.40% are under the age of 18 and 25.50% are 65 or older.
