Newington is a town located in Screven County, Georgia. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 322.

Geography Newington is located at 32°35'21" North, 81°30'16" West (32.589085, -81.504460)1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 2.1 km² (0.8 mi²). 2.1 km² (0.8 mi²) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 322 people, 137 households, and 89 families residing in the town. The population density is 151.6/km² (394.1/mi²). There are 154 housing units at an average density of 72.5/km² (188.5/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 69.88% White, 25.78% African American, 0.00% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 1.24% from other races, and 3.11% from two or more races. 3.11% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 137 households out of which 26.3% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.7% are married couples living together, 15.3% have a female householder with no husband present, and 35.0% are non-families. 32.1% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.7% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.35 and the average family size is 2.98.

The population is spread out with 23.9% under the age of 18, 10.6% from 18 to 24, 23.6% from 25 to 44, 23.0% from 45 to 64, and 18.9% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 39 years. For every 100 females there are 89.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 81.5 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $22,750, and the median income for a family is $23,125. Males have a median income of $27,917 versus $19,000 for females. Per capita income for the town is $11,326. 33.3% of the population and 25.2% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 56.3% are under the age of 18 and 10.7% are 65 or older.
