History Santa Rosa County was created in 1842. It was named for Rosa de Viterbo, Roman Catholic saint.
Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 3,040 km² (1,174 mi²). 2,634 km² (1,017 mi²) of it is land and 406 km² (157 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 13.35% water.
Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 117,743 people, 43,793 households, and 33,326 families residing in the county. The population density is 45/km² (116/mi²). There are 49,119 housing units at an average density of 19/km² (48/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 90.72% White, 4.25% African American, 1.01% Native American, 1.30% Asian, 0.08% Pacific Islander, 0.67% from other races, and 1.98% from two or more races. 2.52% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 43,793 households out of which 36.50% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 62.20% are married couples living together, 10.20% have a female householder with no husband present, and 23.90% are non-families. 19.30% of all households are made up of individuals and 6.60% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.63 and the average family size is 3.00.
In the county the population is spread out with 26.60% under the age of 18, 7.20% from 18 to 24, 31.10% from 25 to 44, 24.10% from 45 to 64, and 11.00% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 37 years. For every 100 females there are 100.60 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 97.90 males.
The median income for a household in the county is $41,881, and the median income for a family is $46,929. Males have a median income of $34,878 versus $22,304 for females. The per capita income for the county is $20,089. 9.80% of the population and 7.90% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 12.60% are under the age of 18 and 7.50% are 65 or older.
