Salmonella is a genus of rod-shaped Gram-negative enterobacteria that causes typhoid fever, paratyphoid[?] and food poisoning. The best known species are probably Salmonella enterica[?], which has numerous strains or serovars, and Salmonella typhi. The former is frequently responsible for food poisoning.
