RPM

RPM stands for Red Hat Package Manager and is a package management system software primarily intended for Linux-based systems (it has, however, been ported to other operating systems). RPM is also the baseline package format for the Linux Standard Base[?].

Every RPM package has a package label, which contains the following pieces of information, separated by dashes:

  • the software's name
  • the software's version
  • the package's release

The package's release shows the number of times the package has been rebuilt using the same version of the software.

The package label is contained within the file and is not necessarily the same as the name of the file.
