Roy Harris

Roy Harris (February 12, 1898 - October 1, 1979) was an American classical composer.

His Symphony No. 3 joined the American repetoire during the same era as works by Aaron Copland and Virgil Thomson. He wrote fourteen other symphonies. His music, while often abstract, is known for its optimistic, American tone.

He studied in Paris with Nadia Boulanger[?], who also taught such American composers as Aaron Copland, Walter Piston[?], Elliott Carter, Virgil Thomson, and Philip Glass.

Other notable works by Harris include:

  • Andante for Orchestra
  • Piano Sonata
  • Concerto for String Quartet, Piano, and Clarinet
  • Piano Quintet
  • Symphony No. 10, Abraham Lincoln
