Regierungsbezirk

A Regierungsbezirk (administrative region or administrative district, which should not be confused with "district") is a subdivision of some Bundesländer in Germany. It is itself divided into districts (Kreis[?]) or equivalent city (kreisfreie Stadt).

The sixteen states are divided into 32 Regierungsbezirke, ranging in population from 5.3 million (Düsseldorf) to 500,000 (Trier). Not all states have this sub-division, some are directly divided into districts.
