Red Oak is a town located in Nash County, North Carolina. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 2,723.

Geography Red Oak is located at 36°1'53" North, 77°54'6" West (36.031373, -77.901734)1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 50.5 km² (19.5 mi²). 50.5 km² (19.5 mi²) of it is land and 0.05% is water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 2,723 people, 984 households, and 821 families residing in the town. The population density is 53.9/km² (139.7/mi²). There are 1,030 housing units at an average density of 20.4/km² (52.8/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 90.67% White, 8.04% African American, 0.07% Native American, 0.26% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.33% from other races, and 0.62% from two or more races. 1.32% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 984 households out of which 38.3% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 74.0% are married couples living together, 6.6% have a female householder with no husband present, and 16.5% are non-families. 14.6% of all households are made up of individuals and 6.5% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.77 and the average family size is 3.06.

In the town the population is spread out with 26.1% under the age of 18, 6.2% from 18 to 24, 28.8% from 25 to 44, 28.7% from 45 to 64, and 10.2% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 39 years. For every 100 females there are 98.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 94.3 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $54,958, and the median income for a family is $61,406. Males have a median income of $40,718 versus $26,091 for females. The per capita income for the town is $22,616. 6.7% of the population and 5.7% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 4.9% are under the age of 18 and 16.6% are 65 or older.
