Nash County, North Carolina

Nash County is a county located in the U.S. State of North Carolina. As of 2000, the population is 87,420. Its county seat is Nashville6.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,406 km² (543 mi²). 1,399 km² (540 mi²) of it is land and 6 km² (2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.45% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 87,420 people, 33,644 households, and 23,920 families residing in the county. The population density is 62/km² (162/mi²). There are 37,051 housing units at an average density of 26/km² (69/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 61.94% White, 33.93% African American, 0.45% Native American, 0.57% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 2.06% from other races, and 1.02% from two or more races. 3.36% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 33,644 households out of which 32.70% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 52.70% are married couples living together, 14.50% have a female householder with no husband present, and 28.90% are non-families. 25.00% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.60% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.54 and the average family size is 3.02.

In the county the population is spread out with 25.40% under the age of 18, 8.50% from 18 to 24, 30.10% from 25 to 44, 23.50% from 45 to 64, and 12.40% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 92.70 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 89.10 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $37,147, and the median income for a family is $44,769. Males have a median income of $32,459 versus $24,438 for females. The per capita income for the county is $18,863. 13.40% of the population and 10.30% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 17.80% are under the age of 18 and 15.20% are 65 or older.
