Rabbit-Proof Fence is an
Australian film about three young half-caste
Aboriginal girls who ran away from a
Western Australian settlement in which they were placed in 1931. The film follows the girls
walking for nine weeks along 1500 miles of
fence to return to their mother's community. The fence is "
rabbit proof", i.e. prevents rabbits from crossing. There really is such a fence, the great Dingo Fence, so called because it has also the purpose of preventing
dingos from crossing (see that article).
