Quay County, New Mexico

Quay County is a county located in the U.S. State of New Mexico. As of 2000, the population is 10,155. Its county seat is Tucumcari6.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 7,464 km² (2,882 mi²). 7,446 km² (2,875 mi²) of it is land and 18 km² (7 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.24% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 10,155 people, 4,201 households, and 2,844 families residing in the county. The population density is 1/km² (4/mi²). There are 5,664 housing units at an average density of 1/km² (2/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 82.09% White, 0.84% African American, 1.27% Native American, 0.80% Asian, 0.15% Pacific Islander, 12.11% from other races, and 2.75% from two or more races. 37.98% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 4,201 households out of which 28.90% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 52.10% are married couples living together, 12.00% have a female householder with no husband present, and 32.30% are non-families. 28.90% of all households are made up of individuals and 13.80% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.37 and the average family size is 2.90.

In the county the population is spread out with 25.00% under the age of 18, 6.70% from 18 to 24, 23.30% from 25 to 44, 26.00% from 45 to 64, and 19.00% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 42 years. For every 100 females there are 94.00 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 91.50 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $24,894, and the median income for a family is $30,362. Males have a median income of $24,801 versus $17,500 for females. The per capita income for the county is $14,938. 20.90% of the population and 15.70% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 25.50% are under the age of 18 and 15.80% are 65 or older.
