Pulaski County, Illinois

Pulaski County is a county located in the U.S. State of Illinois. As of 2000, the population is 7,348. Its county seat is Mound City, Illinois6.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 527 km² (203 mi²). 520 km² (201 mi²) of it is land and 7 km² (3 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.25% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 7,348 people, 2,893 households, and 1,941 families residing in the county. The population density is 14/km² (37/mi²). There are 3,353 housing units at an average density of 6/km² (17/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 66.52% White, 31.00% African American, 0.14% Native American, 0.93% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.27% from other races, and 1.14% from two or more races. 1.46% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 2,893 households out of which 31.20% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 47.40% are married couples living together, 15.80% have a female householder with no husband present, and 32.90% are non-families. 30.00% of all households are made up of individuals and 15.50% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.44 and the average family size is 3.03.

In the county the population is spread out with 27.20% under the age of 18, 8.30% from 18 to 24, 25.30% from 25 to 44, 21.70% from 45 to 64, and 17.40% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 91.80 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 89.30 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $25,361, and the median income for a family is $33,193. Males have a median income of $29,198 versus $19,656 for females. The per capita income for the county is $13,325. 24.70% of the population and 20.50% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 34.70% are under the age of 18 and 21.30% are 65 or older.
