Providence County, Rhode Island

Providence County is a county located in the U.S. State of Rhode Island. As of 2000, the population is 621,602.

Geography The county has a total area of 1,129 km² (436 mi²). 1,070 km² (413 mi²) of it is land and 58 km² (23 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 5.18% water.

Demographics As of 2000, there are 621,602 people, 239,936 households, and 152,839 families residing in the county. The population density is 581/km² (1,504/mi²). There are 253,214 housing units at an average density of 237 persons/km² (613 persons/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 78.38% White, 6.55% African American, 0.51% Native American, 2.90% Asian, 0.07% Pacific Islander, 8.02% from other races, and 3.58% from two or more races. 13.39% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 239,936 households out of which 30.70% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 44.50% are married couples living together, 14.90% have a woman whose husband does not live with her, and 36.30% are non-families. 29.80% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.90% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.48 and the average family size is 3.11.

In the county, the population is spread out with 24.00% under the age of 18, 11.10% from 18 to 24, 29.80% from 25 to 44, 20.50% from 45 to 64, and 14.60% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 35 years. For every 100 females there are 91.80 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 87.90 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $36,950, and the median income for a family is $46,694. Males have a median income of $35,336 versus $26,322 for females. The per capita income for the county is $19,255. 15.50% of the population and 11.90% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 22.30% are under the age of 18 and 12.70% are 65 or older.
