Progressive metal

Progressive metal is a genre of rock music. It combines elements of progressive rock and heavy metal. A very early example is the Canadian band Rush. The late 1980s and early 1990s saw a surge of popularity for the genre, with the arrival of a number of new bands such as Queensryche, Dream Theater, and Fates Warning[?].

Terms describing similar music include melodic metal, power metal, melodic power metal, symphonic metal, space metal and so on.
