Primary production is a term used in oceanography and limnology for the production raised by phytoplankton in the oceans and freshwater, obtaining their energy through photosynthesis and utilizing nutrients. These small green cells are then consumed by the secondary production[?], small animals like ciliates, copepods, krill. It is the basis for all life in the pelagic[?] oceans.
