Porum, Oklahoma

Porum is a town located in Muskogee County, Oklahoma. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 725.

Geography Porum is located at 35°21'30" North, 95°15'57" West (35.358228, -95.265930)1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 2.0 km² (0.8 mi²). 1.9 km² (0.8 mi²) of it is land and 0.1 km² (0.04 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 2.56% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 725 people, 301 households, and 202 families residing in the town. The population density is 373.2/km² (964.3/mi²). There are 341 housing units at an average density of 175.5/km² (453.6/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 61.79% White, 1.52% African American, 28.83% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.14% from other races, and 7.72% from two or more races. 0.83% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 301 households out of which 31.6% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 43.9% are married couples living together, 17.9% have a female householder with no husband present, and 32.6% are non-families. 28.9% of all households are made up of individuals and 16.9% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.41 and the average family size is 2.97.

In the town the population is spread out with 27.9% under the age of 18, 10.5% from 18 to 24, 20.7% from 25 to 44, 24.3% from 45 to 64, and 16.7% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 35 years. For every 100 females there are 87.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 90.2 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $18,009, and the median income for a family is $19,474. Males have a median income of $25,357 versus $18,333 for females. The per capita income for the town is $9,147. 41.3% of the population and 35.3% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 51.0% are under the age of 18 and 33.0% are 65 or older.
