Muskogee County, Oklahoma

Muskogee County is a county located in the U.S. State of Oklahoma. As of 2000, the population is 69,451. Its county seat is Muskogee6.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,173 km² (839 mi²). 2,108 km² (814 mi²) of it is land and 65 km² (25 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 3.00% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 69,451 people, 26,458 households, and 18,467 families residing in the county. The population density is 33/km² (85/mi²). There are 29,575 housing units at an average density of 14/km² (36/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 63.73% White, 13.16% African American, 14.88% Native American, 0.58% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 1.19% from other races, and 6.43% from two or more races. 2.67% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 26,458 households out of which 31.80% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 52.80% are married couples living together, 13.30% have a female householder with no husband present, and 30.20% are non-families. 26.70% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.30% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.51 and the average family size is 3.03.

In the county, the population is spread out with 25.90% under the age of 18, 9.50% from 18 to 24, 26.70% from 25 to 44, 22.60% from 45 to 64, and 15.30% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 37 years. For every 100 females there are 93.30 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 88.90 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $28,438, and the median income for a family is $34,793. Males have a median income of $28,670 versus $20,457 for females. The per capita income for the county is $14,828. 17.90% of the population and 14.10% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 24.00% are under the age of 18 and 14.70% are 65 or older.
