Grebes are members of the Podicipedidae, a widely distributed family of freshwater diving birds, some of which visit the sea when migrating and in winter.

These birds have lobed toes and are excellent swimmers and divers. However, they are quite ungainly on land. They leave the water only to nest, walking very short distances upright like penguins.

Most have distinctive breeding plumages, and the young of the Podiceps grebes are often striped.
