Petrus Peregrinus

Petrus Peregrinus (Pierre de Maricourt) was a Medieval French scientist who lived in the 13th century. He conducted experiments on magnetism and wrote a treatise on the subject, containing the first description of the polarity of magnets. Roger Bacon, who lived at about the same time, valued him highly.
