Penang Island, often called by its Malay name Pulau Penang, was called Prince of Wales Island by the British that took possession of it in 1786.
Penang is connected to the mainland by a bridge 13.5 km long, one of the longest bridges in Asia, completed in1985. It has an airport, Penang International Airport[?] located in Bayan Lepas[?]. Ferry services are available to the mainland.
Penang is a food heaven for food lovers. It is highly industrialized with high-tech plants (AMD, Seagate...).
Most of its population lives in the area of Georgetown, Penang.
Penang is also the name of a Malay state that consists of the island and a small strip of land on the mainland.
