The movie was written by Harry Birckmayer[?], Sheila Gaffney[?] and Daisy von Scherler Mayer[?]. It was directed by Mayer.
In the movie, a library clerk is approached by a woman who simply says, with a lisp, "Orrngses n' spches." The puzzled clerk replies, "Oranges and Peaches? Well, you can try the food-oriented periodicals, but sometimes they're a little holier-than-thou." (it's a wry reference to Origin of Species)
A television show based on the film (with the same name) was produced in 1996. It starred actress Christine Taylor in the role of Mary, with Swoosie Kurtz[?] as Judy. Six episodes were filmed; three were aired, and the show was quickly cancelled.
