Orange County is a county located in the U.S. State of North Carolina. As of 2000, the population is 118,227. Its county seat is Hillsborough6.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,039 km² (401 mi²). 1,036 km² (400 mi²) of it is land and 4 km² (1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.34% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 118,227 people, 45,863 households, and 26,141 families residing in the county. The population density is 114/km² (296/mi²). There are 49,289 housing units at an average density of 48/km² (123/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 78.05% White, 13.79% African American, 0.39% Native American, 4.10% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 1.96% from other races, and 1.71% from two or more races. 4.46% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 45,863 households out of which 28.30% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 44.60% are married couples living together, 9.40% have a female householder with no husband present, and 43.00% are non-families. 28.10% of all households are made up of individuals and 6.10% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.36 and the average family size is 2.95.

In the county the population is spread out with 20.30% under the age of 18, 21.00% from 18 to 24, 29.90% from 25 to 44, 20.40% from 45 to 64, and 8.40% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 30 years. For every 100 females there are 90.10 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 86.70 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $42,372, and the median income for a family is $59,874. Males have a median income of $39,298 versus $31,328 for females. The per capita income for the county is $24,873. 14.10% of the population and 6.20% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 9.00% are under the age of 18 and 7.40% are 65 or older.
