Hillsborough, North Carolina

Hillsborough is a town located in Orange County, North Carolina. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 5,446. It is the county seat of Orange County6.

Geography Hillsborough is located at 36°4'29" North, 79°6'15" West (36.074794, -79.104183)1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 11.9 km² (4.6 mi²). 11.9 km² (4.6 mi²) of it is land and 0.22% is water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 5,446 people, 2,101 households, and 1,428 families residing in the town. The population density is 459.1/km² (1,188.7/mi²). There are 2,329 housing units at an average density of 196.3/km² (508.3/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 60.26% White, 34.83% African American, 0.51% Native American, 0.57% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 1.62% from other races, and 2.20% from two or more races. 2.79% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 2,101 households out of which 34.9% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 42.9% are married couples living together, 20.9% have a female householder with no husband present, and 32.0% are non-families. 26.2% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.6% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.48 and the average family size is 2.99.

In the town the population is spread out with 26.2% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 32.7% from 25 to 44, 21.1% from 45 to 64, and 12.8% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 86.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 81.0 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $40,111, and the median income for a family is $46,793. Males have a median income of $36,636 versus $29,052 for females. The per capita income for the town is $21,818. 12.6% of the population and 11.0% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 16.1% are under the age of 18 and 16.6% are 65 or older.
