Nueces County, Texas

Nueces County is a county located in the U.S. State of Texas. As of 2000, the population is 313,645. Its county seat is Corpus Christi6.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 3,021 km² (1,166 mi²). 2,165 km² (836 mi²) of it is land and 856 km² (331 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 28.34% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 313,645 people, 110,365 households, and 79,683 families residing in the county. The population density is 145/km² (375/mi²). There are 123,041 housing units at an average density of 57/km² (147/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 72.03% White, 4.24% African American, 0.64% Native American, 1.16% Asian, 0.07% Pacific Islander, 18.74% from other races, and 3.13% from two or more races. 55.78% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 110,365 households out of which 36.30% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.80% are married couples living together, 15.30% have a female householder with no husband present, and 27.80% are non-families. 22.60% of all households are made up of individuals and 7.90% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.79 and the average family size is 3.30.

In the county, the population is spread out with 28.40% under the age of 18, 10.50% from 18 to 24, 28.90% from 25 to 44, 21.10% from 45 to 64, and 11.20% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 33 years. For every 100 females there are 95.80 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 92.50 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $35,959, and the median income for a family is $41,066. Males have a median income of $31,571 versus $22,324 for females. The per capita income for the county is $17,036. 18.20% of the population and 14.70% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 24.00% are under the age of 18 and 15.80% are 65 or older.
