Portland is a city located in Texas. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 14,827.

Geography Portland is located at 27°52'59" North, 97°19'14" West (27.883117, -97.320466)1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 24.9 km² (9.6 mi²). 18.1 km² (7.0 mi²) of it is land and 6.8 km² (2.6 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 27.44% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 14,827 people, 5,021 households, and 4,051 families residing in the city. The population density is 820.2/km² (2,125.5/mi²). There are 5,351 housing units at an average density of 296.0/km² (767.1/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 83.79% White, 4.11% African American, 0.57% Native American, 1.05% Asian, 0.20% Pacific Islander, 7.43% from other races, and 2.84% from two or more races. 26.10% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 5,021 households out of which 47.5% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 68.6% are married couples living together, 9.2% have a female householder with no husband present, and 19.3% are non-families. 16.1% of all households are made up of individuals and 6.1% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.94 and the average family size is 3.30.

In the city the population is spread out with 32.6% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 31.2% from 25 to 44, 20.0% from 45 to 64, and 7.9% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 32 years. For every 100 females there are 98.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 93.1 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $48,574, and the median income for a family is $52,220. Males have a median income of $37,316 versus $25,722 for females. The per capita income for the city is $19,871. 7.4% of the population and 5.8% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 9.3% are under the age of 18 and 10.2% are 65 or older.
