Born Herman Northrop Frye in Sherbrooke, Quebec, Canada, he spent his entire career, including his undergraduate days, at Victoria College, University of Toronto. Internationally recognized for his work on William Blake, literary theory, and cultural and social criticism, he was the recipient of some 39 honorary degrees.
