Northampton County, North Carolina

Northampton County is a county located in the U.S. State of North Carolina. As of 2000, the population is 22,086. Its county seat is Jackson6.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,426 km² (551 mi²). 1,389 km² (536 mi²) of it is land and 37 km² (14 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 2.57% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 22,086 people, 8,691 households, and 5,953 families residing in the county. The population density is 16/km² (41/mi²). There are 10,455 housing units at an average density of 8/km² (20/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 39.09% White, 59.43% African American, 0.32% Native American, 0.09% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 0.39% from other races, and 0.63% from two or more races. 0.73% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 8,691 households out of which 27.70% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 45.50% are married couples living together, 18.30% have a female householder with no husband present, and 31.50% are non-families. 28.40% of all households are made up of individuals and 13.20% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.44 and the average family size is 2.99.

In the county the population is spread out with 24.30% under the age of 18, 6.90% from 18 to 24, 26.50% from 25 to 44, 24.90% from 45 to 64, and 17.40% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 40 years. For every 100 females there are 92.00 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 88.60 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $26,652, and the median income for a family is $34,648. Males have a median income of $27,970 versus $21,183 for females. The per capita income for the county is $15,413. 21.30% of the population and 17.00% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 29.80% are under the age of 18 and 21.50% are 65 or older.
