Nidaros Cathedral

Nidaros Cathedral is located in Trondheim, in Norway. It is said to be founded on the burial site of King Olav Haraldsson[?], who was killed at the Battle of Stiklestad[?] in 1030. One year and five days after his death, King Olav was declared a saint. Pilgrims started flocking to Nidaros after this.

Work on the Cathedral started in 1070, and was finished sometime around year 1300. It was, and still is, the greatest church of Norway.

The cathedral was badly damaged by fire in 1327 and 1531, and burned down except for the stone walls in 1708. It was struck by lightning in 1719, and was again ravaged by fire.

Major rebuilding of the cathedral started in 1869 and was officially finished in 2001. Restoration of the cathedral is an ongoing process.
