Nguyen Dynasty

The Nguyen dynasty was a line of rulers of Vietnam in the 18th century to mid-19th century. This is the first and only Vietnamese dynasty when the rulers declared themselves emperors. Nguyễn (阮) is the emperor's family name.

The second thru fifth emperors were not pro-French and what it stood for, such as Catholicism. So like the Qing Empire, there were numerous foreign-related incidents during the 19th century.

The Nguyen Empire expanded its territory by making Kampuchea a protectorate, and invaded Laos.

The following list is the emperors' era names, which have meaning in Chinese. (This was before French was adapted in Vietnam.) For example, the first ruler's era name, Gia Long, means "Beautiful Prosperity"; the fourth means "Inheritance of Virtues"; the nineth means "Collective Celebration".
