Neuschwanstein

Castle seen from the Marienbrücke
larger version

The castle Neuschwanstein is located in Germany, in southwest Bavaria near the Austrian and Swiss borders.

Construction was started by King Ludwig II of Bavaria, also know as "Mad Ludwig." Due to his eccentricites and general abuse of Bavaria's treasury, Ludwig was removed from power before the castle was completed. Soon after his suicide the castle and its amazing interior was opened to the public.

Reflecting Ludwig's love of Wagnerian opera, many tapestries elaborate on themes presented in the operas. Neuschwanstein, the fairy-tale castle of Bavaria, inspired a the modern fairy-tale castle built by Walt Disney at Disney World.
