NetBIOS

NetBIOS generally refers to a programming API. In its early days though, it was a networking protocol. The protocol's API became a de-facto standard. It has since been adapted to work over various other protocols such as IPX/SPX[?] and TCP/IP. The original version of the NetBIOS protocol has evolved into the NetBEUI[?] protocol.
