Music of the Sudan

Modern Sudanese music is mostly based on haqibah[?], which arose in the early 1920s. A tambourine-like instrument called the riq[?] is played by the lead singer alongside three or more back-up singers. Pianos, triangle, qanum[?] and cymbals were soon added. Haqibah is centered around the city of Omdurman.

The two most important haqibah musicians are Sarour[?] and Karoma[?].
