Music of Indonesia

Indonesia is culturally diverse and is home to hundreds of forms of music, with those from the islands of Java, Sumatra and Bali being the most frequently recorded.

The best known is gamelan, orchestra music from Java and Bali. Gamelan orchestras include native instruments like kethuk[?], ketipung[?], kendhang[?], gembang[?], saron[?], bonang[?] and kenong[?], and usually accompany rituals, dances, wayang[?] (a form of shadow puppetry[?]). In the early 20th century, forms called gamelan gong kebjar[?] ad gamelan semar pegulingan[?] were invented.

Other forms include ketjak[?], dandut[?], gambang[?], celempungan[?], kecak[?], kliningan[?], jaipongan[?], kroncong[?] and langgam jawa[?].
