Mordecai Anielewicz

Mordecai Anielewicz (1919-1943) was the commander of the ŻOB? (Żydowska Organizacja Bojowa, Jewish Fighting Organization) during the Warsaw ghetto uprising. A leader of a Zionist-socialist youth group, he was involved in smuggling people out of occupied Europe, but returned to the Ghetto to fight the transportation of Jews to Treblinka. He died in battle in the ŻOB bunker at 18 Mila Street on May 8, 1943. Kibbutz Yad Mordechai in Israel is named for him.
