Montgomery County, Illinois

Montgomery County is a county located in the U.S. State of Illinois. As of 2000, the population is 30,652. It was named in honor of Richard Montgomery, an American Revolutionary War general killed in 1775 while attempting to capture Quebec City, Canada. Its county seat is Hillsboro, Illinois6.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,838 km² (710 mi²). 1,823 km² (704 mi²) of it is land and 15 km² (6 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.84% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 30,652 people, 11,507 households, and 7,928 families residing in the county. The population density is 17/km² (44/mi²). There are 12,525 housing units at an average density of 7/km² (18/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 94.88% White, 3.73% African American, 0.21% Native American, 0.23% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.47% from other races, and 0.46% from two or more races. 1.06% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 11,507 households out of which 31.90% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.10% are married couples living together, 8.90% have a female householder with no husband present, and 31.10% are non-families. 27.80% of all households are made up of individuals and 14.70% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.44 and the average family size is 2.97.

In the county the population is spread out with 23.70% under the age of 18, 8.30% from 18 to 24, 29.30% from 25 to 44, 21.70% from 45 to 64, and 17.00% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 106.40 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 106.40 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $33,123, and the median income for a family is $39,923. Males have a median income of $30,657 versus $20,563 for females. The per capita income for the county is $16,272. 13.40% of the population and 10.60% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 18.40% are under the age of 18 and 11.00% are 65 or older.
