Monmouth, Illinois

Monmouth is the county seat of Warren County, Illinois and home of Monmouth College. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 9,841. It contains Monmouth Park[?], Harmon Park [?], North Park[?], Warfield Park[?], West Park[?], South Park[?], Garwood Park[?], Buster White Park[?] and the Citizens Lake & Campground[?].

Geography Monmouth is located at 40°54'42" North, 90°38'40" West (40.911531, -90.644579)1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 10.5 km² (4.1 mi²). 10.4 km² (4.0 mi²) of it is land and 0.1 km² (0.04 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.49% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 9,841 people, 3,688 households, and 2,323 families residing in the city. The population density is 942.8/km² (2,442.3/mi²). There are 3,986 housing units at an average density of 381.9/km² (989.2/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 92.72% White, 2.80% African American, 0.23% Native American, 0.47% Asian, 0.19% Pacific Islander, 1.91% from other races, and 1.67% from two or more races. 4.35% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 3,688 households out of which 29.6% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 47.7% are married couples living together, 11.5% have a female householder with no husband present, and 37.0% are non-families. 32.1% of all households are made up of individuals and 14.9% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.37 and the average family size is 2.99.

In the city the population is spread out with 23.0% under the age of 18, 17.1% from 18 to 24, 24.1% from 25 to 44, 20.3% from 45 to 64, and 15.5% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 34 years. For every 100 females there are 88.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 85.3 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $33,641, and the median income for a family is $41,004. Males have a median income of $30,006 versus $20,144 for females. The per capita income for the city is $15,839. 11.1% of the population and 8.0% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 14.5% are under the age of 18 and 6.1% are 65 or older.
