Michael Korybut Wisniowiecki

Michael Korybut Wisniowiecki (1640-1673), King of Poland and was the son of a Polish military commander. He was married to the sister of Leopold I, Holy Roman Emperor.

Following the death of King Jan Kazimierz Vasa, the Polish nobility elected Michael as king, believing he would further the interests of the Poland-Lithuania Union. His reign was less than successful, and the nobility were not satisfied with the House of Vasa's dynastic policies. Wisniowiecki's father was of great military fame, but Michael lost a war against the Turks, with Turkey occupying Podolia[?]. He was unable to cope with his responsibilities and with the different quarreling factions within Poland. On his death, Jan Sobieski was elected king of Poland.
