mIRC is popular for its graphical interface to standard IRC functionality and its flexible scripting language. mIRC also comes with a built-in file server which can be set up in channels of the user's choice to provide a command interface to the user's files. mIRC has the capability to connect to multiple servers simultaneously. It was also one of the first clients to implement color and sounds, which it has been widely criticized for doing without any prior formal standardization, as a result of which the color codes may appear as meaningless garbage in clients not implementing it.
For some time, mIRC has been criticized for making it too easy to inadvertently download executable files which, when run, may give an attacker full access to the user's machine. To overcome this problem, mIRC has implemented several protection mechanisms, including default download filters for certain filetypes, confirmation boxes and warning dialogs.
