McDonough County, Illinois

McDonough County is a county located in the U.S. State of Illinois. As of 2000, the population is 32,913. Its county seat is Macomb, Illinois6.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,528 km² (590 mi²). 1,526 km² (589 mi²) of it is land and 2 km² (1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.13% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 32,913 people, 12,360 households, and 7,094 families residing in the county. The population density is 22/km² (56/mi²). There are 13,289 housing units at an average density of 9/km² (23/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 92.88% White, 3.46% African American, 0.14% Native American, 2.02% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 0.47% from other races, and 1.00% from two or more races. 1.48% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 12,360 households out of which 24.30% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 47.10% are married couples living together, 7.50% have a female householder with no husband present, and 42.60% are non-families. 31.80% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.10% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.28 and the average family size is 2.87.

In the county the population is spread out with 17.70% under the age of 18, 27.60% from 18 to 24, 21.50% from 25 to 44, 19.10% from 45 to 64, and 14.10% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 29 years. For every 100 females there are 95.30 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 93.80 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $32,141, and the median income for a family is $43,385. Males have a median income of $29,326 versus $20,798 for females. The per capita income for the county is $15,890. 19.80% of the population and 9.60% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 19.60% are under the age of 18 and 7.20% are 65 or older.
