Macomb, Illinois

Macomb is a city located in McDonough County, Illinois. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 18,558. It is the county seat of McDonough County6.

Geography Macomb is located at 40°27'38" North, 90°40'27" West (40.460501, -90.674048)1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 26.5 km² (10.2 mi²). 25.5 km² (9.9 mi²) of it is land and 1.0 km² (0.4 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 3.90% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 18,558 people, 6,575 households, and 2,952 families residing in the city. The population density is 727.4/km² (1,884.2/mi²). There are 7,037 housing units at an average density of 275.8/km² (714.5/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 88.73% White, 5.93% African American, 0.16% Native American, 3.06% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.69% from other races, and 1.40% from two or more races. 2.10% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 6,575 households out of which 19.1% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 34.9% are married couples living together, 7.4% have a female householder with no husband present, and 55.1% are non-families. 38.4% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.4% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.10 and the average family size is 2.77.

In the city the population is spread out with 12.6% under the age of 18, 42.9% from 18 to 24, 18.2% from 25 to 44, 14.0% from 45 to 64, and 12.4% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 23 years. For every 100 females there are 94.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 93.8 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $25,994, and the median income for a family is $42,069. Males have a median income of $27,663 versus $21,780 for females. The per capita income for the city is $13,470. 29.1% of the population and 12.2% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 22.8% are under the age of 18 and 8.1% are 65 or older.
