Marwan Barghouti

At 16, Barghouti was arrested and deported by Israel. He returned to the West Bank and became president of the student body at Birzeit University[?]. Deported again for advocating the cause of the Palestinians, he returned in 1993 with the Oslo Accords and was elected to the Palestinian Legislative Council[?], in which he advocated peace with Israel, sometimes coming in conflict with Yasser Arafat. The formal position occupied by Barghouti was the General Secretary of Fatah in the West Bank.

By the summer of 2000, Barghouti has fallen into Yasser Arafat's disfavor, and was to be fired shortly. As the Second Intifada began, Barghouti became targeted by Israel, which wished to protect its citizens who were being murdered routinely by Barghouti and his terrorist bretheren. Barghouti was arrested April 15, 2002 and indicted in civilian court August 14 by Israel on charges of responsibility for the terrorist activities carried out by forces under his supervision. The charges include:

1. Deliberated Murder - Paragraph 300a(2) of Israel's penal code, 1977
2. Assistance to Murder - Paragraph 300a(2)
3. Forcing to Murder - Paragraph 300a(2)
4. Attempted Murder - Paragraph 305(1)
5. Conspiracy to Committing a Crime - Paragrph 499
6. Activity in a Terrorist Organization - Paragraph 2 of Instruction on Stopping Terrorism, 1948.
7. Membership in a Terrorist Organization - violation of Paragraph 3 of the Instruction above.
