McLeod County is a county located in the U.S. State of Minnesota. As of 2000, the population is 34,898. Its county seat is Fairmont6.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,310 km² (506 mi²). 1,274 km² (492 mi²) of it is land and 36 km² (14 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 2.72% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 34,898 people, 13,449 households, and 9,427 families residing in the county. The population density is 27/km² (71/mi²). There are 14,087 housing units at an average density of 11/km² (29/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 96.62% White, 0.22% African American, 0.18% Native American, 0.56% Asian, 0.07% Pacific Islander, 1.79% from other races, and 0.58% from two or more races. 3.63% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 13,449 households out of which 34.90% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.20% are married couples living together, 7.30% have a female householder with no husband present, and 29.90% are non-families. 25.00% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.80% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.56 and the average family size is 3.08.

In the county the population is spread out with 27.70% under the age of 18, 7.80% from 18 to 24, 29.30% from 25 to 44, 21.30% from 45 to 64, and 13.90% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 98.40 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 96.10 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $45,953, and the median income for a family is $55,003. Males have a median income of $35,709 versus $25,253 for females. The per capita income for the county is $20,137. 4.80% of the population and 2.80% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 4.80% are under the age of 18 and 8.10% are 65 or older.
