Marshall County, Alabama

Marshall County is a county of the State of Alabama. Its name is in honor of John Marshall, famous Chief Justice of the United States. As of 2000 the population was 82,231. Its county seat is Guntersville.

History Marshall County was established on January 9, 1836.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,614 km² (623 mi²). 1,469 km² (567 mi²) of it is land and 145 km² (56 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 9.00% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 82,231 people, 32,547 households, and 23,531 families residing in the county. The population density is 56/km² (145/mi²). There are 36,331 housing units at an average density of 25/km² (64/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 93.38% White, 1.47% African American, 0.53% Native American, 0.24% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 3.24% from other races, and 1.09% from two or more races. 5.66% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 32,547 households out of which 32.40% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.80% are married couples living together, 10.70% have a female householder with no husband present, and 27.70% are non-families. 24.60% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.90% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.50 and the average family size is 2.96.

In the county the population is spread out with 24.90% under the age of 18, 8.50% from 18 to 24, 29.00% from 25 to 44, 23.40% from 45 to 64, and 14.20% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 37 years. For every 100 females there are 94.80 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 91.50 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $32,167, and the median income for a family is $38,788. Males have a median income of $30,500 versus $20,807 for females. The per capita income for the county is $17,089. 14.70% of the population and 11.70% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 17.90% are under the age of 18 and 19.30% are 65 or older.
