Guntersville, Alabama

Guntersville is a city located in Marshall County, Alabama. As of the 2000 census, the population of the city is 7,395. The city is the county seat of Marshall County.

Geography Guntersville is located at 34°20'54" North, 86°17'40" West (34.348197, -86.294523)1.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 105.2 km² (40.6 mi²). 61.3 km² (23.6 mi²) of it is land and 43.9 km² (17.0 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 41.77% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 7,395 people, 3,061 households, and 1,971 families residing in the city. The population density is 120.7/km² (312.7/mi²). There are 3,518 housing units at an average density of 57.4/km² (148.8/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 88.17% White, 8.53% African American, 0.49% Native American, 0.41% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.95% from other races, and 1.45% from two or more races. 2.87% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 3,061 households out of which 27.5% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 47.5% are married couples living together, 13.7% have a female householder with no husband present, and 35.6% are non-families. 32.4% of all households are made up of individuals and 14.4% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.28 and the average family size is 2.88.

In the city the population is spread out with 22.4% under the age of 18, 7.1% from 18 to 24, 27.0% from 25 to 44, 24.3% from 45 to 64, and 19.2% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 41 years. For every 100 females there are 88.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 84.8 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $29,882, and the median income for a family is $39,464. Males have a median income of $36,175 versus $20,480 for females. The per capita income for the city is $18,503. 14.2% of the population and 11.2% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 15.2% are under the age of 18 and 16.3% are 65 or older.
