Marion County, Alabama

Marion County is a county of the State of Alabama. Its name is in honor of Francis Marion of South Carolina, general in the American Revolutionary War. As of 2000 the population was 31,214. Its county seat is Hamilton.

History Marion County was established on February 13, 1818. Until 1866 it also contained the area now included in Lamar County.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,926 km² (744 mi²). 1,920 km² (741 mi²) of it is land and 6 km² (2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.29% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 31,214 people, 12,697 households, and 9,040 families residing in the county. The population density is 16/km² (42/mi²). There are 14,416 housing units at an average density of 8/km² (19/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 94.76% White, 3.63% African American, 0.29% Native American, 0.20% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.39% from other races, and 0.70% from two or more races. 1.15% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 12,697 households out of which 30.40% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.40% are married couples living together, 9.50% have a female householder with no husband present, and 28.80% are non-families. 26.50% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.70% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.39 and the average family size is 2.87.

In the county the population is spread out with 22.50% under the age of 18, 8.20% from 18 to 24, 28.20% from 25 to 44, 25.20% from 45 to 64, and 15.80% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 39 years. For every 100 females there are 98.00 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 95.20 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $27,475, and the median income for a family is $34,359. Males have a median income of $26,913 versus $19,022 for females. The per capita income for the county is $15,321. 15.60% of the population and 12.00% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 18.80% are under the age of 18 and 20.00% are 65 or older.
