Fayette County, Alabama

Fayette County is a county of the State of Alabama. Its name is in honor of the Marquis de Lafayette (or de la Fayette), who aided General George Washington in the American Revolutionary War. As of 2000 the population was 18,495. Its county seat is Fayette.

History Fayette County was established on December 20, 1824.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,630 km² (629 mi²). 1,626 km² (628 mi²) of it is land and 4 km² (2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.27% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 18,495 people, 7,493 households, and 5,342 families residing in the county. The population density is 11/km² (30/mi²). There are 8,472 housing units at an average density of 5/km² (14/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 86.92% White, 11.93% African American, 0.21% Native American, 0.15% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.27% from other races, and 0.51% from two or more races. 0.82% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 7,493 households out of which 30.80% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.30% are married couples living together, 10.60% have a female householder with no husband present, and 28.70% are non-families. 26.60% of all households are made up of individuals and 13.50% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.42 and the average family size is 2.92.

In the county the population is spread out with 23.90% under the age of 18, 8.20% from 18 to 24, 26.50% from 25 to 44, 25.30% from 45 to 64, and 16.10% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 39 years. For every 100 females there are 93.50 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 89.60 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $28,539, and the median income for a family is $35,291. Males have a median income of $29,239 versus $20,606 for females. The per capita income for the county is $14,439. 17.30% of the population and 13.10% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 21.10% are under the age of 18 and 21.80% are 65 or older.
