In Hebrew, Mara means "bitter", which pretty much suits her personality. She is tough and strong like the other women in the Star Wars universe. She has firey red hair, deep green eyes, and the figure of a dancer.
As you might be able to tell, Mara is not in any of the Star Wars movies. The Emperor Palpatine[?] trained her and used her as an assassin. Her last order from him She was ordered to kill Luke Skywalker, and was sent to Jabba's Palace[?] to await him. But Mara failed, and vowed to complete her mission even after the Emperor died.
Eventually, Mara and Luke would have to work together in several situations. It would be ten years before the two would realize their feelings for each other and marry. Mara would then continue her training in the force and become a Jedi Knight[?].
In the New Jedi Order books, Mara and Luke (along with the other characters in the Star Wars universe) fight together against a new threat, the Yuuzhan Vong, who infected Mara with a dangerous and deadly disease. She was able to control the disease, and then found out that she was pregnant. She carried the baby to term, and nearly died when giving birth. But The Force bolstered by the bond that she, Luke, and the new baby shared was able to cure her of the disease.
The child that Luke and Mara have together was named Ben, after Obi-Wan Kenobi.
