Madison County is a county located in the U.S. State of Indiana. As of 2000, the population is 133,358. The county's county seat is Anderson, Indiana6.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,173 km² (453 mi²). 1,171 km² (452 mi²) of it is land and 2 km² (1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.17% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 133,358 people, 53,052 households, and 36,234 families residing in the county. The population density is 114/km² (295/mi²). There are 56,939 housing units at an average density of 49/km² (126/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 89.90% White, 7.88% African American, 0.23% Native American, 0.35% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.60% from other races, and 1.01% from two or more races. 1.49% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 53,052 households out of which 29.90% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 52.50% are married couples living together, 11.80% have a female householder with no husband present, and 31.70% are non-families. 27.20% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.70% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.41 and the average family size is 2.91.

In the county the population is spread out with 23.80% under the age of 18, 9.10% from 18 to 24, 28.30% from 25 to 44, 23.90% from 45 to 64, and 14.90% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 37 years. For every 100 females there are 97.10 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 94.40 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $38,925, and the median income for a family is $46,663. Males have a median income of $35,585 versus $23,719 for females. The per capita income for the county is $20,090. 9.30% of the population and 7.00% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 12.90% are under the age of 18 and 6.10% are 65 or older.
