Alexandria, Indiana

Alexandria is a city located in Madison County, Indiana. The population was 715 in 1890, 7,221 in 1900 out of which 1,002 were foreign-born, and 5,096 in 1910. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 6,260. It is about 46 miles northeast of Indianapolis.

Alexandria is served by the Cleveland, Cincinnati, Chicago & St Louis, and the Lake Erie & Western railways, and by the Indiana Union Traction System (electric). In the city are a Carnegie library and Beulah Park (24 acres), the latter belonging to the Northern Indiana Holiness Association, which there holds summer camp-meetings. The city is in a rich farming country, which produces Indian corn, oats and wheat; and is in the Indiana natural gas region, to which fact it owes its rapid growth as a manufacturing centre. It is one of the principal seats of the glass industry in Indiana-- plate glass, lamp chimneys, mirrors, &c., being manufactured here--and also has mineral wool factories and paper mills. The municipality owns and operates the water-works and the gas-lighting plant. Alexandria was founded in 1836 and was chartered as a city in 1893.

Geography Alexandria is located at 40°15'47" North, 85°40'35" West (40.263191, -85.676267)1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 7.0 km² (2.7 mi²). 7.0 km² (2.7 mi²) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.

Demographics As of the census2 of 2000, there are 6,260 people, 2,481 households, and 1,654 families residing in the city. The population density is 891.9/km² (2,308.6/mi²). There are 2,704 housing units at an average density of 385.2/km² (997.2/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 98.10% White, 0.46% African American, 0.08% Native American, 0.11% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.43% from other races, and 0.80% from two or more races. 0.99% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 2,481 households out of which 33.9% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 49.0% are married couples living together, 12.7% have a female householder with no husband present, and 33.3% are non-families. 28.9% of all households are made up of individuals and 13.1% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.48 and the average family size is 3.04.

In the city the population is spread out with 27.8% under the age of 18, 8.9% from 18 to 24, 28.0% from 25 to 44, 19.5% from 45 to 64, and 15.9% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 35 years. For every 100 females there are 91.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 87.4 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $35,359, and the median income for a family is $42,731. Males have a median income of $30,529 versus $23,384 for females. The per capita income for the city is $15,578. 7.0% of the population and 4.2% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 4.1% are under the age of 18 and 15.0% are 65 or older.
