Mackinac County, Michigan

Mackinac County is a county located in the U.S. State of Michigan. As of 2000, the population is 11,943. Its county seat is St. Ignace6.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 5,440 km² (2,101 mi²). 2,646 km² (1,022 mi²) of it is land and 2,794 km² (1,079 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 51.37% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 11,943 people, 5,067 households, and 3,410 families residing in the county. The population density is 5/km² (12/mi²). There are 9,413 housing units at an average density of 4/km² (9/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 80.07% White, 0.20% African American, 14.21% Native American, 0.31% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.28% from other races, and 4.92% from two or more races. 0.90% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 5,067 households out of which 26.50% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.60% are married couples living together, 8.10% have a female householder with no husband present, and 32.70% are non-families. 28.00% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.90% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.32 and the average family size is 2.81.

In the county the population is spread out with 22.20% under the age of 18, 6.00% from 18 to 24, 25.10% from 25 to 44, 28.40% from 45 to 64, and 18.20% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 43 years. For every 100 females there are 99.70 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 97.20 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $33,356, and the median income for a family is $39,929. Males have a median income of $30,805 versus $22,753 for females. The per capita income for the county is $17,777. 10.50% of the population and 7.20% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 13.70% are under the age of 18 and 8.40% are 65 or older.
